A 63-YEAR-OLD man carried on sleeping after a fire broke out in his flat – and even his smoke detector failed to wake him.

Smoke seeped into the flat upstairs and woke his neighbour who alerted firefighters.

The drama happened at the flats on Ward Square off Upper George Street in Springwood at 4.10am today.

Watch Manager David Price, of Huddersfield fire station, said: “It was lucky the neighbour woke up or we could have been dealing with a tragedy.”

The man had left a pan on which burned away giving off toxic smoke.
