PARENTS will be banned from parking outside their children’s school.

Kirklees Council has stepped in after months of angry disputes between residents and parents outside Fixby Junior and Infant School.

Police community support officers were called to Lightridge Road in March after complaints about parents parking in residents’ drives and on the white zig-zags outside the school.

Later that month a group of year six pupils went round with police officers issuing tickets to cars parked illegally.

And now Kirklees Council has issued a traffic regulation order along stretches of the road to prevent mums and dads from stopping there when dropping off or collecting their children.

Headteacher Jenny Chamberlain welcomed the move yesterday.

“I fully support anything which encourages people to park sensibly around the school,” she said.

“We’ve got to put the safety of our children first and I hope that parents can find safe places to park.”

Mrs Chamberlain said that parking was a problem at the school.

She said: “There are a lot of parents trying to park in a small space and there isn’t any room for them to turn around.”

The headteacher added that many children were driven to school from outside the immediate area.

She said: “Most of the children who live in Fixby walk to school, but we also have children who come from quite far away, from other areas like Fartown and Birkby.”

The traffic regulation order will prevent drivers parking outside the school between 8am and 6pm on weekdays.

The order will affect two stretches of Lightridge Road, four sections of The Fairway and two lengths of Spinneyfield.

A council spokesman said yesterday: “The works in Lightridge Road are part of our scheme to improve road safety around the schools of Kirklees.

“The programme ensures that road markings and signs are kept up-to-date so that congestion and safety are less of a worry for families, and in particular children.”
