PARENTS should be spared the expense of new school uniforms, a councillor has said.

Dalton Lib Dem Clr Rochelle Parchment wants Huddersfield schools to avoid altering their uniforms during the recession.

The mother-of-three said: “Things are becoming more difficult for lots of families. Introducing changes to uniforms now is just heaping on the pressure. Changing school uniform puts pressure on kids to have the latest blazer or the right type of jumper and this can lead to bullying. I know of at least one school which has made a change for each of the last three years. This is too much.

“Schools should be looking to have a simple, established uniform which is within everyone’s reach.”

Clr Parchment has written to Kirklees Council’s Cabinet member for schools Clr John Smithson about the issue.
