PARENTS fighting to save children’s centres will take their battle to the streets.

They will be collecting signatures for a petition in Huddersfield town centre this weekend, opposing Kirklees Council’s planned closures or cuts at the Sure Start Children’s Centres.

Mum of two Gemma Wilson, who has a third child on the way, is a regular user of the Newsome Sure Start centre and will be speaking about the wider impact closures would have.

Kirklees Council officers have drawn up a proposal to slash spending on the borough’s 32 centres by 6%.

They plan to reduce costs by splitting children’s centres into 15 so-called “lead” centres offering full services in poorer areas and 17 “associate” centres providing more limited support.

Gemma said: “Restricting children’s services goes beyond cost-cutting measures and it is important for the full council to see exactly how their decisions will affect families.”

The Save Our Sure Start campaigners will be collecting signatures in the town centre from 1pm on Saturday, outside Boots or the Railway Station.
