A PARK in Dewsbury was last night sealed off by police.

All entrances to Crow Nest Park on Heckmondwike Road in Dewsbury were guarded by officers after several police vehicles were sent to the scene at around 8pm last night.

One man walking to his local pub said he was stopped and searched as he strolled through the park by officers who took his details.

A short time later, the entire park was sealed off.

One witness said: “It looks like the investigation is focusing on Dewsbury Museum and Art Gallery in the park.’’

Police confirmed they were dealing with “an incident”, but could give no more details.

Heckmondwike Road runs from Scout Hill to the Dewsbury Moor estate.

Crow Nest park was opened to the public in 1893 and founded upon the landscaped gardens of a country house estate.

Dewsbury Corporation paid £50,000 to buy the land and the mansion house from the Hague family in the 1890s.

It was designed to bring a feel of the countryside into what was a very industrial area with most of the town's residents employed in the many textile mills in the town.

There was originally a park lodge at each of the four entrances, although only two now remain.

The museum features several generations of local people in the Growing Up in Dewsbury exhibition on the ground floor and also focuses on old toys.

It provides a chance to take a journey back in time to the first decades of the 20th Century.
