VILLAGE traders are facing the prospect of losing their fight for a car park.

Shopkeepers in Kirkburton have been parking on land at the back of a former petrol station during a spell of road works.

They want to make it permanent to free up street parking for shoppers in North Road.

But Kirklees Council is set to rule that the land is unsuitable as long-term parking space.

They are poised to make the decision after fears about the access.

Highways officials said they had severe concerns about visibility at the junction with North Road.

A report said there was undeniable community benefit in a car park for traders, but this was outweighed by the road safety fears.

Councillors will see the site for themselves in a visit tomorrow before making a decision on the application by Kirkburton Business Association.

Local Tory councillor Christine Smith said parking was essential for businesses if they were thrive.
