CLUB GROUP/NAME: Huddersfield Alzheimer's Society

SPOKESPERSON: Janet Dudley, projects manager

THE BASICS: Every Tuesday there is a social drop-in held at the Head of Steam pub in St George's Square 10am-noon. This group is attended by carers and the person diagnosed with dementia, and carers whose loved one is now resident in a care home, also those who are no longer caring but wish to continue to be involved. We also have carer groups in Dalton, Kirkheaton, Skelmanthorpe, Holmfirth, Lindley, and Slaithwaite. There is also an "after caring" group for people recently bereaved. We have two groups who cater for people diagnosed with dementia who wish to share their thoughts with others in a similar position. We are in the process of developing more of these groups.

WHAT ELSE DO WE NEED TO KNOW? The groups also arrange social events such as meals out or day trips. If anyone needs more detailed personal advice and information there are workers available to offer this support in the main office. We are also hoping to launch a club for people aged under 65 who are affected by a diagnosis of dementia and their carers. There is also a need to launch groups to help ethnic minority communities. Anyone interested in either of these areas please contact the office.

CLUB PHILOSOPHY: The Alzheimer's Society commits itself to maintaining, improving and promoting its unique knowledge and understanding of dementia. It seeks to define and develop quality in its activities and services, to be inclusive of all communities, but in particular people with dementia, their families and the professionals who work with them, and to work in partnership with other organisations which share its aims.
