CHILDREN with diabetes have given a special tribute to a retiring doctor who has given them 24-hour care.

Dr Michael Sills has retired as a consultant paediatrician at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

To mark the occasion, a party was held in his honour by the Huddersfield Parents Support Group for Children Living With Diabetes.

Committee member Justin Roche said: “Dr Sills has been an absolute star. He set up special clinics for children with diabetes and has also provided us with a 24-hour on-call service.

“He has regularly taken children away on residential weekends to show that they can live independent lives with diabetes. He’s been absolutely fantastic.”

He provided his patients with his home and mobile telephone numbers so they could get in touch with him.

He was presented with paintings of the two areas where the residential weekends are held – Askrigg in the Yorkshire Dales and Ghyll Head on Windermere.

Dr Sills won the Friend of the Year category in last year’s Examiner Community Awards. His party was held at Edgerton’s Ukrainian Club.
