A COUNCILLOR convicted of harassing his wife has been ousted by his party on Kirklees Council.

Clr Colin Walder has been suspended from the Liberal Democrat group after his conviction at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court.

Clr Walder, 54, will be able to continue his work as a councillor for Dalton ward.

But he will not be involved in the Liberal Democrat group's discussions or debates.

The suspension will remain in force until he comes up for sentence at the court on March 29.

Clr Walder, of West Grove Avenue, Dalton, was convicted after a two-day trial this week.

The court was told he had ignored an injunction banning him from contact with his estranged wife.

Council leader Clr Kath Pinnock said: "I met Clr Walder and told him it had been decided to suspend him from the Liberal Democrat group until the outcome of the sentencing later this month.

"He can still fulfill his duties as a ward councillor. But he will not be involved in group decisions and cannot use the facilities at our disposal."
