SIGHTSEERS could soon take themed tours of the Peak District.

The Peak District Interpretation Partnership is launching a project called Cultural Trails to tell the story of the area.

It is hoped a side effect will be a boost to the rural economy.

The idea is to create trails for visitors to follow around the national park, on various themes such as films, literature or heritage.

For example, places that would be visited on literary trails would include Hathersage, the model for the village of Norton in Charlotte Bronte's classic novel Jane Eyre.

There would be 10 themed trails, which would guide visitors from places of interest to shops, pubs, cafes, accommodation, craft centre or local produce suppliers.

Project officer Gavin Bell said: "We'll be holding a series of seminars at various locations over the next year to develop the themes of the trails and build links with businesses.

"We want the trails to have the widest possible benefit for the small rural businesses of the Peak District."
