STAFF at the South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust have been praised by the people they care for.

The National Service User Survey was sent to 850 people who had used mental health services across Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield in the past six months.

They were asked to comment on what they thought was good about their care and if they felt anything could be improved.

Results show that:

* 81% of people had seen a psychiatrist in the last 12 months and 83% said he or she had treated them with dignity and respect.

* 89% of respondents said that their community psychiatric nurse listened carefully and 91% said the nurse treated them with dignity and respect.

* 94% who had a phone number to contact got through within an hour and 70% did immediately.

* 78% said care received was good, very good or excellent.

* 88% said they had enough say in decisions about care.

The trust also received some comments which were not so good.

But officials welcomed those, saying they were just as valuable, as they could help to identify where improvements were needed.

There were concerns about cancelled appointments, a lack of information about care co-ordinators and a shortage of information about local support groups.

Trust chief executive Judith Young said: "I'd like to thank all our staff whose hard work, dedication and commitment is reflected in many of the comments.

"We are also grateful to all the people that took part in this survey, providing us with such valuable feedback.

"All the results will be used to help the trust continue to develop and improve our mental health services."
