RESIDENTS of a sheltered housing complex celebrated the opening of their new decking area with a patio party.

The new deck at Burhouse Court, Honley, was built by volunteers from Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH), who swapped their computers and phones for shovels, saws and screwdrivers.

The normally desk-bound team toiled for two days to transform wasteland outside the lounge into a patio for residents to enjoy.

KNH, which manages Kirklees’s 24,000 council houses, built the project with a KNH Excel Community Grant.

Lesley Reynolds, scheme co-ordinator at Burhouse Court, said: “The area used to be unusable. It was just bushes and poor soil over layers of rubble and old concrete.

“It was back-breaking work to prepare the ground for the new decking, but it was definitely worth it. The residents think it’s great because everyone who lives here will have somewhere to sit and enjoy the sun.”
