A 13-HOUR siege in a village near Barnsley ended peacefully after armed police stormed a flat.

A man of 29 threatened to hurt himself with a knife when officers forced their way into the flat in Hoyland after a tense stand-off.

Earlier, his wife and 16-month-old daughter were released unharmed from the building.

The man, who is believed to be an asylum seeker, had holed himself up in the house after immigration officers and police tried to arrest him.

He was found to have suffered superficial injuries and was taken to hospital.

Police are expected to question him later today over the incident.
