FOOD labelled nut free has been found to contain traces of peanut.

Asda's white muffins have been withdrawn from sale following swift action by West Yorkshire Trading Standards officers.

They warned shoppers with nut allergies to steer clear of the product if they found it on the store's shelves.

The product is labelled with the statement "nut free".

But following a consumer complaint, analysis has shown that some batches may contain traces of peanut.

In addition, Asda acted quickly to get the muffins off the shelves and have today issued a formal product recall.

Martin Wood, Chief Officer of West Yorkshire Trading Standards said: "Although this is potentially a serious issue I am happy with the swift and responsible approach being taken by all concerned.

"If anyone has any doubt about the product they may have purchased they should contact Asda Customer Relations on 0500 100 055".

The product involved is a pack called `Asda 6 white muffins 35p.'
