ALMOST 300 Huddersfield Town fans were today gearing up for Pedal for Pounds 3.

And this group of 13 women were determined to meet the challenge.

Town’s Tandemettes, headed down to Yeovil yesterday ready for the start of Huddersfield Town’s annual cycling challenge in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s Keep It Up Campaign.

At 2pm today, they will join 280 others to begin their 260-mile journey from Yeovil Town’s Huish Park to the Galpharm Stadium, hoping to arrive in time for the last game of the season on Saturday.

And they will be sent on their way by former Town favourite Marcus Stewart.

Yesterday, this group of business women aged between 30 and 45 – none of whom are “seasoned cyclists” – were the first to set off.

In total they will be using three tandems and seven single bicycles.

Team member Mandy Barwick was diagnosed with breast cancer last July, and is due back in to hospital a week after she returns from the epic challenge.

She said: “We were all chatting at a Kirkwood Hospice event and decided to get involved.

“We didn’t realise at that point how big an ordeal this was.

“We started training but the weather has truly gone against us recently.

“It is great to be involved in such a challenge with such wonderful women, the camaraderie has been fantastic.

“And we are very proud to know that our fundraising will make a difference.”

The total sponsorship pledged for the Town Tandemettes reached £13,450 yesterday.
