CHURCH-GOERS in Thornhill have saddled up and cycled across the Pennines in an effort to raise funds for their community and church.

Eight members of the congregation of Thornhill Parish Church, Dewsbury, have cycled more than 200 miles from Southport to Hornsea.

They were undeterred by two punctures and one set of broken gears on the first day. Now they are hoping that their pedal power will raise £1,000.

The team, made up of people of all ages, was raising money for an educational and information-sharing initiative. Their bike ride will also fund better lighting, modern information technology and some restoration work for the church.

Christian worship has taken place on the site of Thornhill Parish Church since Anglo-Saxon times. Mentioned in the Domesday Book, the church building is Grade I listed and it is included in Simon Jenkins' book England’s Thousand Best Churches.
