A new crossing is to be added at a busy Newsome junction to boost pedestrian safety.

The pedestrian crossing will be installed at the junction of Damside Road and Kings Mill Road where it meets the end of Newsome Road just before Kings Bridge.

The route is a well used route by local residents and students making their way into Huddersfield town centre.

And it is just a few yards from two huge new student hostels which will bring hundreds more students into the area.

Clr Andrew Cooper, Newsome and Kirklees Green Party leader, said: “We have been asking for a safe crossing here for some time and are pleased to let people know that pedestrian facilities are finally to be installed at Kings Bridge.

“This is a busy route between Newsome and the town centre were people literally take their life in their hands crossing this busy road.

“It’s been a long time coming and we’re pleased it’s happening.”

Work to create the pedestrian crossing begins in May and it will take around four weeks and be complete for June.

Clr Cooper says the route through Newsome Road over the bridge into Huddersfield town centre will remain open with the two adjoining roads closed off as work take place.
