A man in his 70s was critically injured after a collision in Dewsbury earlier today.

The pedestrian was struck by a truck on the A653 at Woodkirk – the main road linking the town with Leeds.

The major route was closed in both directions for more than four hours following the incident at 2.44pm today near the junction with Quarry Lane.

Police said the man was in a “serious” condition.

The road was taped off at the Bulls Head traffic lights up to to the Babes in the Wood pub while emergency services attended the victim.

An accident investigation then took place and the road re-opened shortly before 6.30pm this evening.

The closure of the main route up to the M62 caused huge congestion.
