A man suffered serious head injuries after he was struck by a taxi near Tokyo nightclub in Huddersfield.

The 50-year-old man was crossing the road at Queen Street when he was stuck by a silver Toyota Avensis taxi in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police and paramedics were called to the incident at around 1.15am and the road was closed for a short time.

The casualty was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with suspected head injuries which were considered not life threatening.

Police believe the collision may have been witnessed by a number of people who were in the street at that time and urge them to get in touch.

Pc David Long, from West Yorkshire Police's Safer Roads and Neighbourhood Support team, said: "The incident occurred around 1.15am when the pedestrian was struck by a silver coloured Toyota Avensis private hire vehicle as he crossed Queen Street, close to the Tokyo nightclub.

"The pedestrian suffered a head injury in the incident and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he receiving treatment for injuries that are not considered to be life threatening.

"At the time of the collision there will have been a number of people in the local area and I would ask anyone who witnessed the incident to contact police."
