FOUR trainee teachers are appealing for pencils for The Gambia, where they are going soon.

Michelle Nolan, 24, of Huddersfield, Kirsty Asquith, 21, from Dewsbury, Anna Wilby, 21, of Ossett, and Karen Law, 36, of Heckmondwike, will jet off on May 1 to help teach in schools in the west African country for six weeks.

The four met at Bradford College, where they are now in their third year of teacher training. And they have six weeks to spend how they like.

They decided to take the trip to Tujereng in The Gambia through the organisation, Children of The Gambia.

They are paying for the trip themselves, but they are appealing for pencils and stationery.

Michelle said: "It's very poor there and they need things like pencils."

Some companies have already given money, books and pencils. And Reeds Rains Estate Agents in Market Place, Huddersfield, where Michelle works, have set up a collection box for gifts of stationery.

"If everyone in Huddersfield gave one pencil we would have enough," said Michelle.

The management of the Pack Horse Centre in Huddersfield has agreed to allow the women to hold a collection. The date has yet to be arranged.
