A PENSIONER has been hit and killed by a lorry during a horror crash.

The collision took place at the junction of A653 Leeds Road and Quarry Lane, Dewsbury, on Friday at 2.35pm.

A pedestrian, in his 70s, died at the scene after he was struck by a gold DAF heavy goods vehicle.

The victim is yet to be named.

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses.

A police spokesperson said: “The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later.

“Police are keen to speak to anyone who has witnessed the collision itself or the manner of driving of the heavy goods vehicle immediately prior to this incident.”

The road was taped off at the Bulls Head traffic lights up to to the Babes in the Wood pub while emergency services attended the victim.

An accident investigation then took place and the road re-opened shortly before 6.30pm on Friday.

The closure of the main route up to the M62 caused huge congestion.
