A 77-year-old woman was in hospital today - after being rescued from her blazing home after an arson attack.

She was helped by firefighters and neighbours after thugs set fire to wheeled bins outside her Clayton West home in the early hours.

The woman, who is deaf, was asleep in the house in Holmfield Road  and oblivious to the shouts from neighbours trying to help her.

She was eventually rescued by Skelmanthorpe firefighters and taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke.

"She was very, very lucky" said fire commander Richard Meakin.

Police have launched an arson inquiry.

Full stopry in tomorrow's Examiner.
