AN 84-year-old man has been killed in a tragedy – the third road death in a week in Brighouse.

The pedestrian was certified dead in hospital shortly after the accident involving a lorry on Huddersfield Road.

The lorry was being driven down the road from the Bradley Bar roundabout when the tragedy happened just before Lyndhurst Grove Road shortly before 11.50am yesterday.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A heavy goods vehicle travelling towards Brighouse was in collision with a pedestrian. The 84 year-old male was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, but died shortly after."

The road was sealed off for several hours while police accident investigation experts carried out a detailed examination.

Just last Wednesday a father and his teenage daughter died side-by-side in a smash at the other side of Brighouse.

Stephen Rushworth, 37, and his 15-year-old daughter, Shannan, died when his silver Golf GTi was in collision with a silver Peugeot 106 driven by a 21-year-old man and a brown UPS delivery van at 5.15pm last Wednesday.

The 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Stephen, a welder at metal component manufacturers Walker Brothers in Elland, had separated from his wife, Donna Wood, two years ago and also leaves two young daughters, seven-year-old Megan and four-year-old Melanie, who also live in Brighouse.
