Police have named a Holmfirth pensioner whose body was found near his home on Wednesday night.

He was Robert Castle, a married 75-year-old man, known universally as ‘Bob’, who lived in Royds Avenue, New Mill.

Police mounted a big inquiry after he was found collapsed on land close to his home and sadly confirmed dead at hospital.

Det Insp George Bardell of Kirklees CID said: “Mr Castle was a reitred boiler engineer at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary who had lived in Royds Avenue for 50 years with his wife Jean.

“He also had a 53-year-old son.

“Although we are not considering the death to be suspicious it remains unexplained.”

He said officers would be in the area this evening (Fri) between 8pm and 10pm to take part in an Information Seek.

Mr Bardell added: “We want to identify any persons who may have passed by him prior to his death that evening.”

Paramedics were called to the house after his body was found outside his home by a relative and a neighbour.

He was taken to hospital where it was later confirmed he had died.

A large area of grassland off Royds Avenue was cordoned off with blue and white police tape.
