PENSIONERS hope to scale new heights when they take part in a Huddersfield town centre ‘climb’.
Mike Darling and his friend Alister Henderson, both in their 60s, will don mountaineering gear as they attempt to scale the north face of KIngsgate.
Starting in the busy shopping area they plan to clamber their way up to Peak Nero– the cafe Nero coffee shop.
The bizarre challenge was dreamt up by the pair as a way of raising cash for Comic Relief.
They will join hundreds of people across Huddersfield taking part in weird and wacky fundraisers to help poor and vulnerable people.
Mike said: “The theme this year is do something funny for money so we decided to do this as it’s really different.
“While we’ll be kitted out with all the gear we won’t actually be climbing up any buildings – we’re pensioners so it’ll be more like crawling and staggering!
“But we’ll be going for a world record attempt as I don’t think anyone has ever tried this up King Street before – we have flags to hold up when we get to the top!
“It should be a real laugh and we’re hoping lots of people come and watch and help us raise money.”
Mike’s wife Pauline will be rattling a collecting tin.
Watch Mike and Alister make their climb in King Street from 9am tomorrow.
