YOUNGSTERS in Lepton now have skate expectations after the opening of a new park.

Four-wheeled teens have been given the perfect playground.

The skate park was created after lots of hard work by local group Lepton Link.

The group, who are made up of members of the community, originally applied for cash from organisations in 2001 to develop the playground in the park off Highgate Lane.

Now the £40,000 first-class skate park has been built, thanks to a grant from the Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd charity fund, Kirklees Council, Kirkburton Parish Council and community group Lepton Link.

Lepton Link member Marcus Beaumont said: "We had a competition with the local schools and asked pupils to design what they wanted to see in their skateboard park.

"After that we worked with Andy Wisdom, who runs the Wisdom skateboard shop in Huddersfield, to see what could be done."

Mr Beaumont said work on the park took six weeks.

He added: "We have had a lot of young people skating on the pavements and roads and we don't want to see anyone getting knocked down or injured.

"Now the skateboarders have their own place and we hope it is going to have a really positive effect on the area."

Anyone interested in joining Lepton Link should go to the group's next meeting on Tuesday October 4 at Lepton Scout Hut off Highgate Lane at 7pm.
