A bleeding man had to treated by paramedics after smashing the window of a neighbouring house.

Michael Folan suffered a deep gash to his hand after damaging the unoccupied property next door to his home on Bradley Mills Lane.

The incident happened two days after the 64-year-old caused £1,000 worth of damage to a door at Queensgate Market in Huddersfield town centre.

Kirklees magistrates heard that Folan had a difficulty with alcohol.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of criminal damage as well as admitting a charge of theft.

The court heard that on September 26 police attended Bradley Mills Lane to a report of a man there behaving aggressively.

Folan was pacing up and down in his garden and carrying a glass bottle.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “He seemed to be under the influence of something and had injured himself.

“There was a small amount of blood on his face and his hand was bleeding heavily.

“The window at the next door house to his – belonging to Kirklees Council and unoccupied – was smashed.

“There was a trail of blood leading from the window to him.”

The officers attempted to administer first aid before paramedics arrived but Folan was abusive to them.

Two days earlier on September 24 Folan was caught stealing a box of chocolates from Thorntons on Princess Alexandra Walk.

Queensgate Market, Huddersfield.

He was challenged and put the chocolates back but later kicked out at the automatic doors of Queensgate Market after they failed to open quickly.

Folan damaged one of the door panels then swore at the market manager when he confronted him.

The court was told that he’d had an alcohol problem for many years and was a year ago a persistent offender.

He had tried to combat this with a residential detox but his drinking had recently worsened again.

Magistrates sentenced him to a 10-week curfew as punishment.

Folan must also pay £150 court charge and £60 victim surcharge.
