A NEW pet store is opening in Huddersfield following a six-figure investment.

Pets at Home has created nine jobs in the town with its £165,000 investment in a new store at the Gallagher Retail Park in Waterloo.

The store, which will provide thousands of products for dogs, cats, small animals, reptiles, chickens, birds, fish and wildlife, opens on Friday, May 13.

The firm, which was launched in 1991, already has a store at Great Northern Retail Park. It has more than 280 sites across the UK employing more than 4,900 people.

Pets at Home was recently named a Sunday Times Top 100 Employer and was the winner of Retail Week magazine’s Speciality Retailer of the Year award 2010.

The new store is managed by Sarah Gibbins, who has been with the company for eight years – and owns a rabbit called Nigel. More than 90% of Pets at Home employees keep animals themselves.

Sarah and her team have been undergoing special training in the run-up to the opening of the new store.

She said: “I love my job. We are all passionate about pets and that is evident to everyone who visits a Pets at Home store.

“I’m delighted to be opening our new store in Huddersfield. The new store will offer everything a pet owner could wish for, all under one roof. We will provide plenty of advice and ideas for customers and we welcome pets of all shapes and sizes.”

Pets at Home is also looking to pet charities it can support in the area through its Support Adoption for Pets charity.

In the past 12 months, Support Adoption For Pets has raised more than £1m to support more than 350 animal welfare charities and local re-homing centres across the UK.
