KIRKLEES people are being warned about a scam which could see money stolen from their bank accounts.

Bogus callers in the Sheffield area have been phoning people to tell them they are due a refund after paying too much council tax.

The callers have been asking for dates of birth and bank account details before promising to refund the money.

But they use the information to take money from the accounts.

Clr Andrew Palfreeman, Kirklees Cabinet’s member responsible for the Revenues and Benefits Service, said : “We do not know of anyone in Kirklees having fallen prey to these despicable acts, but it may only be a matter of time before they do.

“If you need to give your bank account details to the council you can do this in writing or in person at one of our information points.

“If you receive a call of this nature do not give personal details over the phone.

“If you have given out information you are worried about contact our council tax service on 01484 414900.”
