RETAILERS at Huddersfield’s Piazza Shopping Centre have been urged to join a new waste recycling scheme.

Centre manager John Beardall has teamed up with Trevor Holmes, of Kirklees Council’s cleansing department to set up a scheme to collect and recycle office paper, such as letters and envelopes.

They have also extended existing measures for collecting clean cardboard to include other “green bin” items which can be recycled, such as plastic bottles and drinks cans.

More than half the Piazza tenants have joined the scheme so far – including Bhs, WH Smith and Boots.

Piazza staff have issued 23 bins for office paper to tenants and are organising regular collections of clean cardboard and other recyclable items.

Sensitive or confidential letters can be shredded before being put in the bins.

Mr Beardall said: “We want to improve our recycling quota to the point where 50% of our waste is recycled.

“This will reduce the amount we send for incineration and in the longer term should also bring a reduction in our overall costs.”
