A CIGARETTE thrown from a car window set a truck on fire on the M62.

The Ford Transit pick-up style truck was heading towards Leeds on the motorway at 9.20am yesterday when the driver noticed flames in the back of the vehicle.

Its cargo of cardboard packaging was on fire.

He pulled on to the hard shoulder near Outlane and pulled the burning cardboard off the truck, helped by a other motorists.

Firefighters from Elland dealt with the burning cardboard and discovered the fire had been started by a cigarette, which had landed in the open back of the truck after being thrown from a passing vehicle.
