HUDDERSFIELD enjoyed its warmest day of the year.

But it’s likely that after three days of glorious weather, we can expect cooler and cloudier conditions for the rest of this week.

Temperatures just nudged 26° Celsius (79°F) yesterday afternoon, after Monday had seen temperatures rise to 24°C (76°F).

It brought families out into Greenhead Park and the town centre.

Children splashed in the paddling pool at the park as people lazed on the grassed areas.

It was a similar story across great swathes of the country, as weeks of downpours were replaced by scorching weather.

Some parts of England and Wales saw temperatures reach 30°C.

The outlook was also good news for organisers of the London Olympics, as the hot and dry conditions are set to remain for Friday’s opening ceremony.

Helen Rossington, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: “It’s probably going to get to 30°C in the London area.

“A lot of places in England and Wales will be in the mid to high 20s.”

But Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland will be cloudy with possible rain.

Ms Rossington added: “Wednesday is looking fairly similar in the South where we could get temperatures of 29°C or 30°C again.

“There is a risk the heat and humidity could trigger sharp showers in the Midlands and Wales though.

“It’s likely that it will be dry for the opening ceremony but there’s a small chance of a shower.”

In Huddersfield, Salendine Nook weather expert Paul Stevens said the warm Continental air had brought the three days of good weather but it will not last.

“Today we will start to see much cloudier conditions, which will be quite humid at first but will then start to turn cooler.

“As we head towards the end of the week, it will be noticeably cooler and we could well see some showers.

“It has been very pleasant for the start of the summer holidays for families but we’re not really into a spell of summer weather.

“But don’t despair, as there could well be spells of very good weather to come throughout August”.
