THE long lazy days of summer have seen many of us spend time in the garden.

And for those who can tear themselves away from the barbecue or that book and comfy chair in a sunny spot, there are plenty of wildlife treasures to find.

Christopher Marsden spotted this beautiful Large Red Damselfly in Longwood.

The dragonfly, or to give it its full title Pyrrhosoma nymphula, is photographed against the background of red veined sorrel (Rumex sanguineus).

“I think this is a mature male,” said Christopher. “Large Red Damselfly males defend their perch sites from male interlopers and wait for potential mates.

“The larval stage lasts two years. This ends with the aquatic larva climbing up emergent vegetation to metamorphose into the adult which lives for about three weeks including just a week of maturity.”

Christopher’s eye was caught by the harmony of the insect and its surroundings.
