FIREFIGHTERS take a breather while tackling a grass fire in Longwood.

The blaze spread though fields between Longwood Edge and Longwood Gate at the weekend.

This picture of firefighters surveying the magnificent Yorkshire scene was taken by Examiner reader Ged Wilkie.

For those unfamiliar with Longwood, Longwood Edge leads from Raw Nook Road at Salendine Nook, down to Nab End Tower, and behind Huddersfield New College and Salendine Nook High School.

The 150th anniversary of Nab End Tower was celebrated this year.

It was built by unemployed men in 1861 during a time of economic depression to keep people employed and out of the pubs.

Also known as Longwood Tower, it is 25ft high and has 26 spiral steps to the top.

Kirklees Council spent £200,000 restoring the tower in 2008.
