IT’S one of our town’s most recognised landmarks which currently has even more poignancy.
The war memorial at Greenhead Park is the place people pay their respects to those who have lost their lives in conflict.
Now the town will also remember it’s most recent fallen hero – 27-year-old Golcar soldier Lance Cpl Graham Shaw who was killed in Afghanistan on February 1 while serving with the 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment.
Longwood photographer Christopher Marsden visited the park’s war memorial during the day’s last light on Friday evening.
It was the eve of Operation Moshtarak, a major US-led assault on a Taliban stronghold in the Helmand area of Afghanistan which includes British troops.
Around 15,000 Nato and Afghan troops are taking part in the massive offensive around Marjah against the Taliban logistical and opium poppy smuggling network in the militant-influenced south of Afghanistan.
Christopher’s image was taken at 5.25pm – the last light of the day here as, more than 3,000 miles away, troops prepared for the launch of the operation.
