Tens of thousands of people have been packing the streets of Brighouse for a trip back in time.

Visitors from all over the world have been attending the 1940s weekend – which has seen dancing in the streets, a rally of vintage military vehicles and a song or two from yesteryear.

The weekend event is the town’s chance to celebrate 70 years since VE Day and has been organised by the Brighouse Business Initiative, a collective of the town’s traders.

Among those enjoying the Saturday were the Hampton family, who were visiting Yorkshire from Texas in the United States.

Mick, on holiday with wife Sue, brother Charles and sister-in-law Janey, said: “We’ve never seen anything like it, it’s just brilliant.

“Seeing the classic cars and how well they’ve been kept all these years was a real treat!”

Visitors have been treated to a series of variety shows with singing and dancing on the streets – a nod to the victory street parties when the end of the war in Europe was announced.

A planned fly-past on Saturday had to be cancelled due to the high winds but there were trips on the canal, a mini-steam train ride and a real ale bar to keep people entertained.

Vintage buses have been on hand for free trips around the town.

John Buxton, a member of the Brighouse Business Initiative organising team, said: “The pleasure seen on the faces of the crowd as they dance, sing and chat to their friends makes people proud to be in Brighouse.”

Among the locals enjoying Saturday’s fun were Louise Rogan, husband David and their children Toby, seven, and Lottie, four, who live in Rastrick

Louise said: “It’s just amazing what the businesses put on every year.

“The kids have loved it and we’re really thankful to the people who have encouraged their imaginations and let them sit in their cars or spoke about their costumes. It’s been a great day.”

The fun continues today (Sunday) with street stalls and entertainment throughout the day.
