Netball ace Lydia Walker returned to her former school to help inspire the sport’s next generation.

Lydia, 19, who plays for Superleague team Yorkshire Jets and is in the England under-19 squad, was back at Lindley Junior School to talk about her career so far.

Lydia, in the squad for the England U19 tour to Australia this summer, is also a former student at Salendine Nook High School and Greenhead College in Huddersfield. She has just finished her first year at Leeds Beckett University.

This year Lydia joined Yorkshire Jets and made her debut in March in a game televised live on Sky Sports.

At Lindley she met up with the school’s netball team and organised some skills coaching.

On Saturday England U19s will take on an England Development team at Huddersfield University as part of a double header which also sees England Netball’s squad for the Netball World Cup in Sydney in August warm up against an England Select team.

Lydia, who grew up in Lindley, said it was great to go back to her old school and added: “I was inspired by my teachers at school to be the best netballer I could and I hope I can help inspire some of the stars of the future.

“It’s been an amazing year for me joining the Yorkshire Jets Superleague squad, playing my first game live on television and then being selected for England.

“As a Huddersfield girl I’m delighted England are playing in the town this weekend as part of their World Cup preparations. It’s really exciting.”

The afternoon of international netball takes place at Huddersfield University on Saturday (July 11) from 2pm. Tickets are still available at www.yorkshirejets.net/england
