Drivers were left holding their noses after a load of pig muck was spilled on a main road.

The unfortunate deposit at the bottom of Wakefield Road in Dewsbury caused a stink across the town centre.

One lane was blocked in rush hour on Monday and drivers were forced to negotiate the muck heap.

Kirklees Council’s cleansing teams were despatched with shovels to clear the road.

Motorists saw the funny side and turned to social media to warn that Dewsbury was a “no go” area because of the stench.

On Facebook group Dewsbury Pictures Old and New, people said it could be smelled for up to a mile away wafted by the wind.

The smell was reported as far away as Dewsbury District Hospital and Earlsheaton.

One passer-by, Donna Owens, took this photograph and described the smell as “really bad.” Others used slightly more descriptive language.
