A LANDMARK building is to be restored.

Pioneer House in Dewsbury town centre has fallen into disrepair, despite being a Grade 2 listed building.

Kirklees Council has now ordered the owners Stayton Group to carry out the preservation work. If they refuse, the council will carry out the repairs and send the company the bill.

Clr Ann Denham is chairman of the Kirklees Planning and Highways Committee which made the decision. The Almondbury Lib Dem said: “It is very sad that the building has been allowed to deteriorate. We have no alternative but to take this action to preserve Pioneer House.”

Dewsbury East councillor Paul Kane welcomed the decision to improve the Northgate building.

The Labour man said: “Dewsbury people are very concerned about the state of Pioneer House. It’s great that firm action is going to be taken to protect this listed building.”
