A SUNDAY League football match was halted after a pitch invasion - of more than 20 police officers.

Officers charged on to the field at the Heatherleigh ground, between Ainley Top and Outlane, during the second half of yesterday's lunchtime clash between Walkers Arms, of Golcar, and the red and whites of Lowerhouses.

The police clambered over a fence and sprinted on to the pitch off Lindley Moor Road to arrest one of the Lowerhouses players.

The man was detained on suspicion of offences involving firearms.

He is still in custody at Huddersfield police headquarters today.

One astonished spectator said: "It's the last thing you imagine.

"I saw policemen climbing over a wire and timber fence when there's an open gate about 10 yards away.

"One moment the teams were playing as normal and the next there's a load of police on the pitch.

"They dashed straight on and pounced on one lad and dragged him down to the ground.

"The way the referee was looking I thought he was going to give them a red card."

Another onlooker said the second half had just kicked off with the Walkers Arms leading 2-1.

He added: "I have never seen anything like it.

"There were two police vans and dog handlers - the lot.

"I went to Old Trafford on Saturday but I had more excitement at Heatherleigh."

The Walkers Arms ended up winning 4-1.

The onlooker added: "The Walkers Arms let them put on a substitute.

"I doubt circumstances like this are covered in the rule book."
