SHORT-stay parking charges could be brought in at a Huddersfield car park.

The new parking tariffs are intended to encourage Huddersfield shoppers to use the Cambridge Road car park.

Council officials behind the scheme admit the car park is currently an underused commuter car park. But they say it is convenient for the Huddersfield Open Market, Kirklees College and other businesses in the area.

It is proposed to introduce a short stay tariff of 50p for one hour, £1 for two hours, and £1.50 for three hours alongside the existing commuter tariff of £2.50 for five hours and £4 for over five hours.

The move comes after businesses based in the HighfieldsŠ and Cambridge Road area petitioned the council for the change.Š

Clr Peter McBride, Kirklees Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We are keen to boost the local economy and we are happy to respond to the representations from businesses in this area to attract more shoppers.”

The changes will be advertised and should come into affect from April 18.
