Scissett Baths has been given the green light to build a new fitness suite.
The Wakefield Road leisure centre has plans for an all new building amid a surge in its popularity.
Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL), who run the facility, say membership has shot up by more than 50% in the past three years to more than 600 people.
KAL says the fitness suite had become “very cramped” which often led to a “lower quality member experience”.
It now plans to construct a two storey gym in its car park, thanks to funding from Sport England.
While the plans have been given the go-ahead KAL chiefs said they could not yet confirm the full development.
A spokesman said: “We have a outline plan for a development which includes additional changing rooms, a new multi-purpose room, a new dance studio, a new larger gym and improved wetside.
“We are working up final proposals for the scheme and are working towards finalising required funding but cannot confirm exact details at this time.”
Plans lodged with Kirklees Council show the new fitness suite will be 50% bigger than the current gym.
On the first floor an exercise studio will be built to cater for classes such as zumba, pilates and circuit training.
The air-conditioned building will be linked to the current 1920s built premises by a fully enclosed walkway.
The exact design of the building is yet to be confirmed and permission to proceed is dependent on planners agreeing with the materials used.
Initial drawings indicate it will be a flat-roofed cladded building to the right hand side of the existing premises.
