DEVELOPERS have unveiled a scheme to build a four-storey apartment block in Scholes.

Oldham-based Millerbrook Properties hope to demolish Lee Mills in St George's Road and replace it with 24 two-bedroom luxury flats.

The mill, which is about 100 years old, is part of a bigger complex.

An earlier application to convert the building was passed by Kirklees Council planners.

But because of the poor condition of the building, Millerbrook bosses decided they needed to knock it down and begin afresh.

Richard Ward, managing director of Millerbrook, said: "The building itself was hit by a fire and the costs for putting the existing building into a usable space, when we looked into it, were prohibitive."

If planning permission is granted, construction could begin early in 2005 with the flats available next October.

They would be priced between £170,000 and £180,000.

The flats would have flexible living space with sliding walls between rooms.
