A MAYOR has slammed plans for traffic-calming measures near two schools.
Mirfield Mayor Martyn Bolt - also a Kirklees councillor - hit out at plans for Old Bank Road and Kitson Hill Road.
The sites are near Mirfield Free Grammar School and Old Bank Junior, Infant and Nursery School.
Clr Bolt said the proposals looked like a "blank sheet" in comparison to plans unveiled in 2002.
"We wanted extensive consultation," he said. "We wanted not only residents, but people who commute through the area, to be able to respond. That never happened, and we now have a scheme which will not be adequate for the area."
Clr Bolt said: "There have been a significant number of injury accidents over the last three years. I do not feel the scheme reflects the significance of them."
He wants Kirklees to set up consultation on the new plans.
Council officials said there would be public consultation. A spokes- woman said officials had looked again at the detailed accident records for the roads.
"They then designed layout changes and two plateaux near the Free School to improve visibility and reduce speed.
"Officers believe these are appropriate."
