DEMOLITION plans have been unveiled for a park shelter branded "a den of iniquity".

Drug takers and under-age drinkers are said to be gathering at the old shelter in Victoria Park, Holmfirth, beneath its scenic view terrace.

Now it is set to be swept aside as part of a £111,000 improvement plan for the park.

Holmfirth councillor Nigel Patrick said: "Victoria Park is in the centre of Holmfirth and it is hardly used.

"It suffers from anti-social behaviour and has had very little investment for many years."

The plans - still subject to public comment - include improvements to a concrete terrace area nearby, resurfaced paths, new seats and a refurbished children's play area.

To improve access to the park, a footpath would be opened up on the western edge to Binns Lane.

Clr Patrick said he hoped the plans would bring the park back to life and attract more people.

He said: "These are draft proposals and I welcome feedback from members of the public."

Plans will be on show at Kirklees' Holme Valley South area committee next Tuesday at 7pm in Holmfirth Methodist Church, School Street. They are also available for comment at Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre until January 14.
