There are plans to hold an Alternative Market in Huddersfield at Easter.

It follows the success of the Alternative Christmas Market, which was held in St Peter’s Gardens as part of last year’s Festival of Light.

Now Kirklees Council want young people with a creative flare for designing, making or for performing to apply to take part in the Easter Alternative Market, which would run from 11am - 5pm on Saturday, April 4.

The Alternative Market organisers are looking for applications from local young people aged 13 to 29 years old with creative talent to showcase sell their fantastic range of products or show off performance skills.

The fusion of youthful passion, creative retail and live acts offers a platform for local designers, makers and performers to showcase their unique skills and talents. The Alternative Market offers creative young people the opportunity to be entrepreneurial and help to keep Huddersfield town centre a thriving, bustling marketplace that attracts shoppers and visitors.

Organiser Lucy Bye, Skills Project Officer at Kirklees Council, said: “Following last year’s Christmas Alternative Market, we are well underway with plans for the Easter Alternative Market.

“At the last market there were 70 stalls and 16 performances, some making over £500 profit, and this is a great opportunity for a young budding entrepreneur.”

Clr Peter McBride, Cabinet Member for Regeneration said “This is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to bring their products to market and to showcase their talents.

“We have strong training schemes through the local schools, colleges and University, but this is a real life experience of trading and is invaluable to anyone wanting to set-up their own business, even if they’re only 13 years old.”

To apply to be a part the Easter Alternative Market visit www.kirklees.gov.uk/alternative by the deadline of 20 February.
