PLANS to build a controversial old people’s retirement village are still on the go, developers have insisted.

In January, 2007, the then planning minister Ruth Kelly approved proposals for a 17-hectare campus at Storthes Hall, Kirkburton, following a long planning battle.

But not a single stone has been laid since permission was granted for the estate which will provide lifelong care for 300 people.

Developers Younger Homes, however, say all parties are keen to start work on the complex which will include a restaurant, fitness centre and swimming pool.

The plans will include the historic hall and clock tower which will provide accommodation for 60 people.

Younger Homes, of Brighouse, say they are negotiating final details with Kirklees Council on the project which is modelled on Hartrigg Oaks retirement community, at York.

Director Bill Ibberson said: “We’re anxious to get going on it, as are Kirklees. Everyone is keen to see this progress.”

The site next to Storthes Hall student village was bought from Huddersfield University in 2003.
