GREENHEAD Park’s £5million makeover – featuring a new lake, restaurant and play area – is a step nearer.

Planning applications have gone in for much of the work that is to be done.

Council officers say they want to revitalise the Trinity Street park to make it a place where children will have ‘great memories’.

The multi-million pound refurbishment is part of a number of projects to overhaul open spaces, with both Marsden and Ravensknowle parks also being spruced-up.

Robert Whittaker, parks development officer for Kirklees Council, said: “The plan for Greenhead Park is a total refurbishment. We have big ideas which will include a new lake and creating a new play area for children.

“People have great memories of parks. When they were little kids they would go along to our local parks and enjoy themselves; we want to make sure the kids of today will have the same great memories themselves.”

As well as the new lake, the listed conservatory will be refurbished which will house the new dining area. Access to the park will be improved, the footpaths re-laid and new toilet facilities introduced.

Mr Whittaker added: “It is a major refurbishment project for the council which will cost £5million. This is not something we can fund ourselves; we have some funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund which is allowing us to make these improvements.

“Greenhead Park is a really popular place but it is looking a little tired and needs a lot of work being done to it.

It’s still a place where people want to go and enjoy and we need to make improvements to the infrastructure.”

Extra seating will be created around the bandstand at Marsden Park, and the tennis courts will be refurbished. Ravensknowle Park will have a new entrance and more car parking spaces.

Work on Greenhead Park will start next September and will take around 18 months.
