PLANS for a new teaching block have been submitted for a Brighouse school.

William Henry Smith School has applied for a low-rise, single storey new build specialist teaching facility.

It will comprise of two class rooms, two meeting rooms, lobby and attendant toilet, kitchen and services areas.

The application shows it would be built on what is currently a field in greenbelt area, and will cover 317sq.m within a site area of approximately 15.23 hectares.

A report, submitted with the planning application, says: "Planning consent was granted on May 29 1991 ref: 91/00768/FULfor the erection of three detached accommodation blocks adjoining the school’s main car park.

"In the event, only two of the approved buildings have been built and it has been accepted by officers of the local planning authority that this consent remains extant and therefore that the additional building can be constructed at any time.

"It is intended that the extension currently proposed, replaces this extant floor space previously approved."

The application is open for people to comment on and will be considered by either planning officers or councillors.

The Boothroyd Lane school was established in 1961 and provides specialist residential education for students aged 8-16 years with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and additional complex educational and behavioural needs for children with autism.

It currently has 64 pupils from around the north of England.
