NEW uses are planned for two former toilet blocks in Huddersfield.

Kirklees Council is hoping to make, rather than spend, a pretty penny by converting a public toilet into a takeaway.

Officials have asked for permission to convert the closed convenience at Newsome Road in Newsome into a new business.

Council planners have applied to knock down the toilet block and put up a new building.

This would be allowed to house a shop, financial or professional business or even a hot food takeaway.

Newsome councillor Julie Stewart-Turner said she hoped it would not become a take-away and not on hygiene grounds!

She added: "It has been closed for some time.

"We have, as ward councillors, put forward that they don't go for the takeaway option.

"It is near to the traffic lights and could pose a problem to other road users if cars park up.

"We would like to see it made into a lovely little office."

In Almondbury planners are also trying to revamp a disused toilet block.

Officials have applied to convert the toilets at Northgate into shops.
